Learn one song on an instrument. You choose the song. You choose the instrument. Get the left side of the mind going and embrace your cultural side. Some of us, like me, are very musically challenged. When I was a kid my mom had a keyboard in the house and I would dabble on it. Actually when I had shoulder surgery, I learned a few songs on that baby because I couldn't really move. So it worked out well. YouTube was my friend. In my elementary school days, I wanted to learn the guitar. Really only because my cousin Kem played the guitar, and every other instrument on planet earth, but I wanted to be just like her. So I took that up for a couple of months, but just wanted to learn songs, not actually how to read music or learn cords (the fundamentals) and failed out. I had no drive for it, and its hard to learn something when you're just trying to be like someone else. I guess take that little nugget right now, always be yourself and do things you want to do because you want to do them, not because you're trying to be cool.
Back to the story, my instrument days were over. I never had any rhythm either. I was the guy always losing the beat. Terrible ha. Soooo, this week. We're going to challenge ourselves to learn one song. It's going to be good for the left side of your mind you may not use that often and a good coordination helper. If you are musically talented, try out a new instrument this week. Something you may have passed over, the harmonica for example. You never know where it can lead! I hope you enjoy this challenge and add something to your toolbox! Have a great week everyone!
REFLECTION: Learning the piano in a week is certainly a challenge. However, it was extremely successful. I was able to learn Adele's "Someone like you," and additionally, I was able to touch up my skills on three other songs that I had long forgotten from years ago on my brief time on the piano.
I purchased a keyboard for a little more than I wanted, nevertheless it came with a case, stand, DVD's which I don't need, and all power cables. It is In my opinion, a good buy. It now sits in my living room and is the center piece because as you may know I don't believe in furniture. Just kidding. By my living room now consists of a keyboard and a yoga mat. Big spender.
My training this past week consisted only of YouTube videos and the struggle to learn cords that I have to figure out where my fingers have to go on the fly. What a under pressure learning curve to be able to hit the notes. With that, I noticed my fingers are extremely small and I definitely have to extend my fingers to hit those 'large hands' notes. But I think I did it!
I loved this week and am really glad to get back on the piano. I studied each night for an hour or more. I was frustrated at times and extremely happy during others. Can't wait until next week.
